Interested in Becoming a Rater?

Raters play an integral part in the CCIE accreditation process. When interpreter education programs apply for accreditation, they submit a Self Study Report (SSR), a comprehensive document that describes and provides evidence on how their program meets the CCIE Interpreter Education Standards. Rater Teams review the respective program SSRs and make recommendations to the full Commission on whether or not to proceed with a site visit. If a site visit is granted, the same team that reviewed the program’s SSR will also conduct the site visit.

Rater Teams

A Rater Team consists of three (3) members: one (1) team leader and two (2) members. Each member must meet the criteria for Rater Teams and agree to abide by the CCIE policies and procedures. Every effort is made for diverse representation on the Rater Teams. Following the policies established for this process, the CCIE will assign Rating Teams to each of the interpreter education program(s). When possible, the Rating Team will consist of various representatives, including instructors, Deaf professionals, interpreter practitioners, and must include at least one current or former full-time faculty member in an interpreter education program.

Criteria for the CCIE Rater Team Members

Applications will be accepted periodically for the training of Rater Team members for the CCIE accreditation process. Rater Team members will be selected based on the following criteria:

- Demonstrate current experience as an interpreter educator in an accredited institution (past five (5) years)

or

- Hold professional credentials (e.g., ASLTA, NAD, RID, state credentials, other professional credentials).

and

- Demonstrate contributions to the profession of interpreting or teaching ASL in the past five (5) years (committee service, publications, workshop presentations, etc.),

- Represent CCIE in a professional manner, and

- Exhibit computer literacy and access.

Rater Duties and Expectations

If selected as a Rater, this is what you may expect in 2009:

• In May, you will receive a Rater’s Handbook and attend a web-based training.

• At the beginning of June, you would be assigned to a Rating Team and given a Self Study Report from one of the programs applying for accreditation.

• Between June 15 and July 15, working by yourself, you will evaluate the program’s documentation for compliance with the CCIE Interpreter Education Standards. You will fill out a Program Evaluation Guide and a Rating Sheet. These will be electronically submitted to the Team Leader by July 15.

• Between July 15 and August 15, the team will work together (e.g., through email, phone, etc.) and arrive at a consensus regarding a team decision and the writing of a team report. In that report, the team will make a recommendation to the Commission regarding a site visit.

• If a site visit is approved, the Rating Team will conduct a site visit in either Fall 2009 or Spring 2010.

• Raters are paid $500 for the review of the Self Study Report and $500 if a site visit occurs. Expenses related with the site visit also are covered.
